 Storm at Clachtoll

Waves crash on the beach and foam scurries across the sand. its a windy November day on Clachtoll beach in the far north west of Scotland. Although its early afternoon the winter sun is low in the sky casting a golden glow on the sea and forming deep shadows. To paint this place with conviction I had to feel the wind on my face and hear the crash of the waves. This a beautiful beach and I hope my painting has captured something of its wild spirit.

Time to feel not think

This painting is part of a series which try to capture the emotions aroused by special places. The places which put us in our place, force us to stop and feel the heart beat of the world around.  Those who have taken the long journey to Sand Bay on the Applecross peninsula will know this is such a place. A statement piece of art which i hope captures a special place.

Feeling my place

The  third in a series of paintings exploring those special places where you feel you can breath a little deeper , sense your place in the world and let everyday worries and cares fall away. I climbed Ben Hiant on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula on a cold November day , as I gained height an expansive view of Loch Sunart opened up , light played across the land and water and I knew I had to capture this moment. This large oil painting is my response to that experience .

 Exhale

The West Coast of Scotland is a place of dramatic weather and ever changing light. Clouds sweep in from the Atlantic and it is a humbling experience to stand and watch the ever changing moods. To feel the power of nature to inspire and heal. .I hope I have captured some of this uplifting energy in my painting.

 Loch Hourn

Twenty Six miles along a single track  highland road, then a kayak expedition finally brought me to the spectacular Barisdale Bay on the brooding and beautiful Loch Hourn. I had been trying for four years to reach this remote location and tears prickled my eyes as I glimpsed the scene. Loch Hourn is a place of rich textures, soaring mountains , and deep waters. You feel small and humble in this place and I have tried to convey this in my painting.  Own this painting and get to visit magical Loch Hourn in the Scottish highlands everyday.

The colour of snow

The path along the shore of Brothers Water in the English Lake District has beautiful views towards the high fells of the Deepdale valley. On this beautiful late Febuary day the light illuminated the snow on the fell tops turning the snow pink with deep blue shadows. The colours of the landscape were suprising in their vibrant intensity, I felt that spring was on its way. In this painting I invite you to take that path and walk over the brow into the distant valley.

The Fairy Pools

The River Brittle on the beautiful Isle of Skye cascades down from the mountains in a series of beautiful waterfalls and tempting pools.Brooding in the distance are the rugged peaks of the Black Cullin. I was enchanted by the contrast in the colours, the cool sombre peaks in the background against the vibrant autumn colours of the moorland. Many loose their heart to the dramatic landscape of Skye and I love to paint there.

 Into the evening light

The beach at Rhosneigr on Anglsey has wonderful views to the west and enjoys spectacular sunsets. On this warm August evening the waves were gently lapping the shore and the peeping   of the Oystercatchers filled the air. What a joy to sit in the balmy evening and sketch as the  sun set. Each time I look at this painting I can feel the calm of that perfect summer evening, and I hope you can sense it too.

The Healing Gaze

One of  a series of paintings which explore the healing and transformative power of nature. I have tried to capture the rhythms of the tide and the light on the landscape, hoping the viewer can feel something of the magic of this spectacular Scottish beach. I stayed at the location for several days sketching, looking, walking and absorbing the atmosphere, a magical experience which fed directly into my painting

Breath

There are places where we feel we can breath a little bit deeper. look to the horizon and feel our troubles recede. I visited Craignish for the first time at a difficult time in my life and as I stood on the old pier looking out I felt the calming beauty of this remote spot. I wanted to capture that feeling in my painting,

Grasmere Morning

Early morning in the Lake District , the mist was rising, the lake had barely a ruffle and there was a hint of spring in the air. This was a moment I just had to capture. I hope you can sense the softness of the light and the calm beauty of a perfect English day in the Lake District.
